This article, published in 1827 by the British East India Company, was based on a collection of Polish poetry by British traveler and administrator Sir John Bowring (1792-1872).Bowring knew several different languages- perhaps as many as 200. He published a number of translations in his lifetime, including the poem and folk-songs of many of the countries of Europe. This article is based on Bowring’s “Specimens of the Polish Poets” (1827), and it reproduces his English-language translations of some Polish poets’ works.The Polish poets included in Bowring’s collection included Jan Kocanowski (or Kochanowski, 1530-84), Szymon Szymonowicz (or Szymonowic 1558-1624), Zimorowicz, Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (or Casimir, 1595-1640), Jan Gawinski (c.1622-c.1684), Ignacy Krasicki (1735-1801), Wegieraki, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758-1841), Bodzinkski, and Lach Szyrma (1790-1866).Bowrings other translations and anthologies of foreign European poetry and literature included “Specimens of the Russian Poets” (1821-23), “Batavian Anthology” (1824), “Ancient Poetry and Romances of Spain” (1824), “Serbian Popular Poetry” (1827), and “Poetry of the Magyars” (1830).Besides writing, Bowring was also involved in politics. He was an advocate of parliamentary reform, Catholic emancipation, and access to education. He was elected to parliament in 1835. In 1854 he was appointed governor of Hong Kong.At the time that Bowring’s collection of Polish poetry was published, Poland no longer existed as an independent nation. What is now Poland was divided between foreign nations, having lost its independence in the 18th century.From medieval times up to the 16th century, however, Poland had been a powerful state. The East India Company authors and Sir Bowring describe how 16th century Jagiellon Dynasty Polish king Sigismund I (1467-1548, ruled 1506-48) presided over a literary renaissance in Poland. During his reign laws were written and circulated in the Polish language, and ancient classics, as well as contemporary European literature, was translated in Polish. His interest in the Italian Renaissance prompted him to bring Italian artists to Poland, sparking a Polish version of the Renaissance.In 1569 the Union of Lublin united Poland and Lithuania, establishing the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Commonwealth had an elective monarchy and was dominated by the aristocracy, who elected the monarch. The Polish-Lithuanian state was one of the largest and most powerful states in Eastern Europe. By the mid-17th century, however, the state began to decline, with rebellions, corruption and disputes between the nobility, and wars against Russia, Sweden, and the Ottoman Empire.The lake king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was Stanislaw II August (1732-98, ruled 1765-95). Stanislaw, an aristocrat who was elected king in 1765, was a major patron of the arts. He played a major role in encouraging the growth of Polish language literature. Stanislaw’s reign was ended by a Russian invasion, which brought an end to Poland’s independence in the 1790s. After Poland’s conquest, Polish nationalism and hopes for the restoration of independence were expressed in Polish literature and poetry.In the 19th century Poland remained divided between the Russian and German empires, despite a series of unsuccessful Polish revolts. Poland regained its independence after the collapse of Germany and Russia in World War I. Briefly divided by the Soviets and Germans again in World War II, it regained its independence after the war.
